Are You Home Alone Bored with Covid-19? Home Photography is the Solution

Written on the 15th of February, 2021

Do you need a large studio to create stunning images? That's not true! All you need is a camera and a basic understanding of lighting. You can discover intriguing things you may have never noticed around your home.

I found an IKEA Stranne Table Lamp on my bedside table. Initially, I took a well-exposed image, but it didn't yield an exciting result. So, I decided to underexpose the shot with my camera. Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo and I achieved a creative and interesting-looking photo. Here is the result of the unedited image in JPEG format.

I then tweaked the image using Lightroom and KaBoom.

This image received a lot of likes and was regarded as an inspirational photo on 500px.com. Additionally, it was featured in an exhibition in 2018 alongside my cat image, as mentioned in my blog post titled "A Cat Story," which many people loved.

The Gear I Used

It all began with a camera and a simple setup in my bedroom. Look at the result! You don't have to venture outside to capture breathtaking images. Just like the alchemist who traveled a long distance only to discover that the treasure he sought was beneath where he used to tend his sheep.

Not long ago, after this image, I went to the basement and discovered an incredible neon light paired with a houseplant. I didn't have my camera, so I grabbed my mobile phone, the Samsung S8+, and opened the camera app. I adjusted the exposure settings and took the shot. Here is the picture with Clarendon's Instagram filter applied. It looks amazing. While it's not quite as good as photos taken with a DSLR or mirrorless camera, the result is still extraordinary.

The Gear I Used

If there's one lesson to learn, striking imagery can be found anywhere, without the need to travel.

Today's exercise is to find something interesting in your home and photograph it. Explore your space and create art! If you're familiar with the basics of photography, you can use any camera to achieve fantastic results.
